Work Smart - Drive Smart
With normal tread wear calculated to be 1/32nd" per every 13,000 miles traveled, you can roughly estimate when to expect to replace the tires on your trailers and power units to meet the following CFR Title 49 Subpart G 393.75 requirements listed below.
(b) Any tire on the front wheels of a bus, truck, or truck tractor shall have a tread groove pattern depth of at least 4⁄32 of an inch when measured at any point on a major tread groove. The measurements shall not be made where tie bars, humps, or fillets are located.
(c) Except as provided in paragraph (b) of this section, tires shall have a tread groove pattern depth of at least 2⁄32 of an inch when measured in a major tread groove. The measurement shall not be made where tie bars, humps or fillets are located.
Major tread groove is the space between two adjacent tread ribs or lugs on a tire that contains a tread wear indicator or wear bar. (In most cases, the locations of tread wear indicators are designated on the upper sidewall/shoulder of the tire on original tread tires.)
Keep in mind that running a tire with a tread depth of less than 2/32nd" remaining has the potential to damage the tire which drives up avoidable repair cost.

Semi Truck Tire Maintenance Tips:
We also encourage you to perform the following tire maintenance tips to extend the life of your truck tires and to help save on fuel cost:
- Visually inspect your truck’s tires prior to operation with your inspection including tire tread area and sidewall areas.
- Look for tires under inflated, items sticking out of the tires and any uneven wear signs
- Verify from the tire manufacturer or supplier the proper air pressure for the tire design required for each season and when hauling a heavy load
- Visually inspect for damaged rims, cracked studs and missing bolts
- Promptly have a tire showing signs of damage removed
- Do not run different tire designs on your truck. Running a radial tire with a bias-ply tire can shorten the life of the tires as well as damaging the internal components of the truck system
- Follow a recommended tire maintenance schedule
- Do keep in mind that under or over inflated tires can reduce the life of the tires and can impact your truck's fuel cost.
You owe it to yourself to see if we can save you some money.
